Nisha showed up at Ithemba when she was three years old. Â She was one of the most beautiful little girls you have ever seen, but through her adorable curls, you could see fear in her eyes, hurt and sadness…she was so desperate for love and attention. Â Her hair had never been washed, causing massive sores and infection on her head. Â Her clothes were so dirty that it was hard to tell their orginal color. Â Her right hand was completely comsumed by a burn, given to her here intentionally be her grandmother, that would not heal because it was never taken care of. Â Nisha was a beautiful three year old little girl in desperate need of help.
When she first arrived, we bather her, washed her hair and got antibiotics for the wounds on her head and hand. Â We made sure that she was fed every day and we began to investigate her home life. Â Nisha does not know who her mom and dad are. Â She lived with her aunt who was an alcoholic and a prostitute, in a one room shack. Â No running water , no electricity, one tiny bed. Â We know that no matter what care we gave her at Ithemba, her situation would not change unless the changes started at home. Â We started meeting with her aunt..giving her resources to overcome her addiction and to find a job to support herself and her niece. Â Today, we are still working with her aunt, helping her to be a better guardian. Â Nisha is now seven years old and a social butterfly amongst the girls at Ithemba. Â Her aunt has taken the responsibility to keep her clean, dressed and protected. Â Nisha is now in second grade, and through the help of our after school tutoring programs she is excelling in her classes. Â She is well fed, and well cared for because people like you decided to be a part of her story…to be the hands and feet of Jesus in her life. Â Nisha now has the opportunity to grow and be loved- to become everything that God create her to be. Â In the township in Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa, there are hundreds of children just like Nisha. Â Children desperate for love and care. Â Children desperate to be set free from the bondage of poverty, and as an oragnization, LUO is determined to give every one of those children a chance to thrive.
